How to get started if you’ve never woven a basket before
One of the best ways to learn is directly from an experienced basket weaver. Try searching for group classes in your area or look into local basket weaver guilds to find teachers who may offer private instruction.
If you can’t find anything in-person, there are many fabulous resources online and in print. You can order kits through weaving suppliers, watch tutorial videos on YouTube, or buy a book of patterns. See my recommendations below!
Where to buy weaving materials, tools, & supplies
There are a handful of excellent basket weaving stores online—and some even have physical locations you can visit. The websites below are US-based, so be sure they ship to your area before purchasing.
Books for patterns & inspiration
Which book(s) you buy depends on what you want to weave. Are you a beginner looking for a sample of all types of baskets? Do you want to learn the beautiful craft of pine needle basketry? Are you looking for artistic inspiration? Below are a few of my favorite books that I’ve used to answer each of those questions.
The Basket Book by Lyn Siler | Great introductory book with primarily flat reed patterns
Handmade Baskets by Lyn Siler | Another fabulous introductory book
Wicker Basketry by Flo Hoppe | An excellent introduction to round reed patterns
The Art of Basketry by Kari Lønning | Patterns and inspiration for stunning round reed baskets
Pine Needle Basketry by Judy Mallow | A wonderful introduction to pine need basketry
You’ll notice that none of these books focus on willow weaving or natural fibers like rush. These are wonderful material for baskets but they’re not something I’ve explored much—yet! If you’re interested in willow weaving, I encourage you to seek out someone with experience growing, preparing, and weaving willow.
